ABOUT THE ROLE:
As an Operations Electrician, you will keep in-service substations, distribution, and campus power facilities running. This is an operating-plant job: inspect, maintain, switch, and restore equipment so load stays up. You will work with energized medium- and high-voltage systems under established safety standards, perform switching and operations up to 161 kV, and respond to faults and call-outs. This position is based in Memphis, TN.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Operate, inspect, maintain, and repair in-service substation and campus electrical equipment, including breakers, transformers, switches, relays, buswork, control systems, and station batteries.
- Perform medium-voltage switching and operations up to 161 kV: write or follow switching orders, isolate and de-energize equipment, apply grounds, verify zero energy, and restore equipment to service.
- Own routine maintenance on medium- and high-voltage operating systems: inspections, lubrication, oil levels, heaters, lights, and connections.
- Respond to outages, faults, alarms, and call-outs; restore service and document what happened.
- Conduct electrical testing on in-service equipment (voltmeters, ohmmeters, ammeters, insulation megger) and assist with relay, transformer, and circuit breaker tests.
- Read and interpret one-lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, and switching orders.
- Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, and control issues on running plant.
- Follow lockout/tagout (LOTO), grounding, clearance procedures, and PPE requirements.
- Coordinate switching and clearances with operators, engineers, and utility crews during planned and emergency outages.
- Document work performed, test results, and observations; keep operating records current.
- Operate company vehicles and specialized equipment; inspect and store personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Perform similar or less skilled incidental duties as assigned.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalency certificate.
- 3+ years of experience working as a licensed electrician.
- Medium-voltage electrical experience, including switching and operations.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Associate degree in electrical, mechanical, or industrial maintenance technology.
- Journeyman or master electrician license.
- Switching and operations experience on systems up to 161 kV (substation, industrial, or utility).
- Experience with medium-voltage switchgear, transformers, and distribution in substations, industrial plants, or data centers.
- Basic understanding of electrical principles (AC/DC circuits, safety standards).
- Ability to read prints/drawings and use common test tools.
- Proficiency with hand/power tools and physical tasks (lifting 50+ lbs, working at heights/confined spaces, outdoors in all weather).
- Strong safety focus, attention to detail, and ability to work independently or in teams.
- Knowledge of print reading for drawings, manuals, and one-lines.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Schedule varies depending on site operational needs; frequent overtime and weekend support is required.
- Ability to perform job duties that require standing, kneeling, crouching, twisting upper body, working in cramped positions, climbing, lifting up to 50 lbs., and working on ladders/lifts at elevated heights.
- Ability to work in an environment requiring exposure to fumes, odors, noise, heat, cold, and rain.
- Ability to rapidly change roles/responsibilities while working in a high-paced, challenging work environment.
- Stand: up to 6 hours per day.
- Sit: up to 3 hours per day.
- Push/Pull: up to 75 lbs. (unassisted) 1–2 hours per day.
- Overhead reach: up to 3 hours per day.
- Walk: up to 3 hours per day.
- Lift/Carry: up to 50 lbs. (unassisted) 1–2 hours per day.
- Climb (ladder/stairs): up to 3 hours per day.
- Kneel/Crouch: up to 3 hours per day.
- Upper body twist: up to 6 hours per day.
- Ability to work in temperatures over 80 degrees up to 3 hours per day.
- Candidate must be capable of safely working at heights, in confined spaces, and working with medium- and high-voltage equipment. Candidate may be required to complete a pre-employment questionnaire and/or physical.
- Willing to work on-site in Memphis, TN. This is not a remote or hybrid role.
