Description

ABOUT THE ROLE:

As a Construction Electrician, you will install and terminate new electrical infrastructure: substations, medium-voltage distribution, feeders, and building electrical. This is a build job, not an operating-plant job — pull, land, and energize new equipment from drawings, then turn it over. You will follow lockout/tagout and grounding procedures and support first energization and switching on medium-voltage systems up to 161 kV. This position is based in Memphis, TN.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Install, terminate, and land new substation and campus electrical equipment, including breakers, transformers, switches, relays, buswork, control systems, and batteries.
  • Install conduit, cable tray, cable, wire, and terminations per issued-for-construction drawings; perform underground duct bank, trench, and cable-pull work.
  • Perform medium-voltage switching and operations up to 161 kV in support of construction and first energization: follow switching orders, isolate equipment, apply grounds, and restore or turn over equipment.
  • Perform installation quality checks and electrical testing (voltmeters, ohmmeters, ammeters, insulation megger) and assist with acceptance and commissioning tests on new gear.
  • Read and interpret construction drawings, one-lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, and work orders.
  • Follow lockout/tagout (LOTO), grounding, clearance procedures, and PPE requirements on an active construction site.
  • Uncrate, set, and dress equipment; climb structures; operate hand and power tools, pulls, blowers, pumps, and portable generators.
  • Support construction energization sequences, punch-list closeout, and turnover to operations with engineers and vendors.
  • Document work performed, test results, and as-built markups.
  • Operate company vehicles and specialized equipment; inspect and store personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Perform similar or less skilled incidental duties as assigned.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate.
  • 3+ years of experience working as a licensed electrician.
  • Medium-voltage electrical experience, including switching and operations.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Associate degree in electrical, mechanical, or industrial maintenance technology.
  • Journeyman or master electrician license.
  • Switching and operations experience on systems up to 161 kV (substation, industrial, or utility).
  • Industrial, substation, or data center construction experience on medium-voltage systems.
  • Ability to read prints/drawings and use common test tools.
  • Proficiency with hand/power tools and physical tasks (lifting 50+ lbs, working at heights/confined spaces, outdoors in all weather).
  • Strong safety focus, attention to detail, and ability to work independently or in teams.
  • Knowledge of print reading for drawings, manuals, and one-lines.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Schedule varies depending on site operational needs; frequent overtime and weekend support is required.
  • Ability to perform job duties that require standing, kneeling, crouching, twisting upper body, working in cramped positions, climbing, lifting up to 50 lbs., and working on ladders/lifts at elevated heights.
  • Ability to work in an environment requiring exposure to fumes, odors, noise, heat, cold, and rain.
  • Ability to rapidly change roles/responsibilities while working in a high-paced, challenging work environment.
  • Stand: up to 6 hours per day.
  • Sit: up to 3 hours per day.
  • Push/Pull: up to 75 lbs. (unassisted) 1–2 hours per day.
