Description

Crusoe is on a mission to accelerate the abundance of energy and intelligence. As the only vertically integrated AI infrastructure company built from the ground up, we own and operate each layer of the stack — from electrons to tokens — to power the world's most ambitious AI workloads. When you join Crusoe, you join a team that is building the future, faster.

We're in the midst of the greatest industrial revolution of our time. The demand for AI compute is boundless, and power is a bottleneck. We're solving that — with an energy-first approach that makes AI infrastructure better for the world and faster for the people innovating with AI.

We're looking for problem-solving, opportunity-finding teammates with a sense of urgency, who believe in the scale of our ambition and thrive on a path not fully paved — people who want to grow their careers alongside a team of experts across energy, manufacturing, data center construction, and cloud services.

If you want to do the most meaningful work of your career, help our customers and partners advance their AI strategies, and be part of a high-performing team that believes in each other, come build with us at Crusoe.

Senior Engineering Manager, Compute

San Francisco, Sunnyvale (On-site)

About This Role

We're looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to lead the Compute Data Plane team — the group responsible for the systems that power VM and bare-metal host lifecycle at scale. This is a high-impact, technically deep role at the core of Crusoe's cloud platform.

You'll own the engineering execution and technical direction for host provisioning, VM orchestration, hypervisor management, and the control paths that connect our compute fleet to the rest of the stack. You'll partner closely with networking, storage, fleet operations, and product to deliver a fast, reliable, and scalable compute platform.

What You’ll Be Working On:

  • Lead and grow a team of software and systems engineers building compute data plane infrastructure

  • Own the reliability, performance, and scalability of VM and bare-metal host lifecycle systems

  • Drive technical strategy for hypervisor management, host provisioning pipelines, and compute control plane integration

  • Define and execute the roadmap for the compute data plane in alignment with fleet growth and product goals

  • Partner with cross-functional teams (networking, storage, GPU platform, infra reliability) to deliver end-to-end compute capabilities

  • Establish engineering best practices, on-call culture, and operational rigor for the team

  • Hire, develop, and retain strong engineers; build a high-performing team culture

  • Represent the team in technical and leadership forums; communicate progress and tradeoffs clearly to senior stakeholders

What You’ll Bring to the Team:

  • 8+ years of software or systems engineering experience, with 3+ years in engineering management

  • Deep technical background in one or more of: hypervisor internals (KVM/QEMU, Xen), Linux systems, bare-metal provisioning, or distributed systems

  • Experience building or operating large-scale compute infrastructure (cloud provider, HPC, or hyperscaler background strongly preferred)

  • Track record of delivering reliable, high-availability infrastructure systems at scale

  • Strong systems thinking — able to reason across the full stack from hardware to control plane

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills; comfortable operating in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment

  • Experience managing senior engineers and setting technical direction, not just coordinating execution

Bonus Points:

  • Experience with GPU infrastructure or accelerated compute workloads

  • Familiarity with OpenStack, cloud-init, iPXE, or similar bare-metal/VM provisioning tooling

  • Background in infrastructure at an IaaS cloud provider (AWS, GCP, Azure, CoreWeave, or similar)

  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code and automation-first operational models

Benefits:

  • Competitive compensation

  • Restricted Stock Units

  • Paid time off & paid holidays

  • Comprehensive health, dental & vision insurance

  • Employer contributions to HSA account

  • Paid parental leave

  • Paid life insurance, short-term and long-term disability

  • Professional development & tuition reimbursement

  • Mental health & wellness support

  • Commuter benefits (parking & transit)

  • Cell phone stipend

  • 401(k) Retirement plan with company match up to 4% of salary

  • Volunteer time off

Compensation:

Compensation will be paid in the range of $237,000 - $288,000 + Bonus. Restricted Stock Units are included in all offers. Compensation to be determined by the applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
