ABOUT THE ROLE:
We are seeking an experienced Data Center Operations Technician to own day-to-day operations of the Meet-Me Rooms (MMR) and Main Distribution Frames (MDF) in a high-density, hyperscale AI training environment. This role is responsible for fiber operations, rack-and-stack activities, power distribution support, HVAC coordination, fiber troubleshooting, and cross-connect installation/maintenance. The successful candidate will ensure maximum availability of Layer 1 connectivity and critical infrastructure while following strict change-management and documentation standards. This position directly supports the reliability of critical connectivity and infrastructure that underpins AI training clusters. Candidates with a strong track record of keeping Layer 1 systems available and well-documented will be highly competitive.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Own operational readiness of MMR and MDF spaces, including cleanliness, access control, labeling, and space utilization.
- Perform fiber operations: install, dress, test, and document fiber infrastructure; execute cross-connect installations and de-installations; maintain accurate fiber maps and circuit records.
- Conduct fiber troubleshooting using OTDR, optical power meters, and fiber shot measurements; coordinate with SSP/NOC and engineering to isolate and resolve production-impacting fiber issues rapidly.
- Execute rack-and-stack of servers, network gear, and supporting hardware; manage cable management, pathway utilization, and physical layer standards.
- Support power distribution within MMR/MDF environments (PDUs, breaker coordination, load monitoring) and escalate power-related issues.
- Monitor and coordinate HVAC needs for MMR/MDF spaces to maintain environmental setpoints critical to equipment reliability.
- Lead or support incident response for Layer 1 and physical infrastructure events; drive root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Follow rigorous change-management processes for all installations, moves, adds, and changes.
- Maintain detailed as-built documentation, asset records, operational logs, and fiber route documentation.
- Mentor junior technicians on safe work practices, fiber handling, testing standards, and operational procedures.
- Drive continuous improvement in deployment efficiency, labeling standards, and risk reduction.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in data center, carrier, or mission-critical telecommunications environments supporting high-availability infrastructure.
- Strong Layer 1 networking and fiber optic experience, including OTDR and optical power meter testing.
- Proven rack-and-stack, hardware installation, and cable management skills.
- Experience with circuit turn-up, validation, preventive maintenance, and production incident response.
- Familiarity with change management, documentation, and SLA-driven operations.
- Ability to work independently and coordinate effectively with NOC, engineering, vendors, and cross-functional teams.
- Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT) or equivalent strongly preferred.
- Willingness to work in a fast-paced, secure, high-availability hyperscale environment; flexible schedule as needed for critical maintenance windows.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Experience with Ciena, Nokia, Infinera, or similar optical transport platforms.
- Prior work in MMR/MDF or carrier hotel environments.
- Experience supporting hyperscale or AI/ML data center infrastructure.
- Working knowledge of power distribution and basic HVAC coordination in critical spaces.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor junior technicians and improve operational processes.
