Description

About the Role

Armada is hiring a Senior Data Center Commissioning Engineer to support the Galleon, Leviathan, and Orion product lines, a brand-new capability for the company. As we scale Modular Data Center (MDC) deployments for AI workloads across a growing number of sites, we need someone who can own the commissioning thread that runs from factory acceptance testing through site start-up, functional testing, Integrated Systems Testing (IST), and handover to operations, and make sure every system performs as designed before a customer takes over.

You will build Armada's commissioning program from the ground up: the commissioning plan, test scripts, and turnover standards for Level 1 through Level 5 commissioning across MV/LV electrical distribution, UPS and battery energy storage (BESS), liquid and air cooling, BMS/EPMS controls, and fire and life safety systems. Because our products are factory-built, you'll push as much testing as possible into the factory, so units arrive on site pre-tested and site commissioning focuses on integration and verification. This is a hands-on senior IC role. You'll write the procedures, lead the tests, and be the commissioning point of contact for customers, third-party commissioning agents, contractors, and OEM vendors, while feeding what you learn back into product engineering.

Location. Remote, USA (approximately 40–50% travel to domestic and international project sites, factory/integrator facilities, and vendor locations)

What You'll Do (Key Responsibilities)

  • Commissioning program and standards: Build and own Armada's commissioning program to industry standard (the ASHRAE Guideline 0 and Standard 202 commissioning process and the industry-standard Level 1 through Level 5 testing framework), including the commissioning plan, OPR/BOD alignment, pre-functional checklists, functional performance test scripts, IST procedures, and turnover requirements, so every Galleon/Leviathan/Orion deployment commissions against one repeatable playbook instead of a one-off plan per site.
  • Factory acceptance testing: Define and lead factory acceptance testing (FAT and integrated FAT of complete modules) at integrator and vendor facilities for modules, e-houses, skids, and major equipment (switchgear, UPS, BESS, CDUs, chillers, controls), shifting testing into the factory so units arrive on site pre-tested and ready to integrate.
  • Site commissioning through IST: Lead receipt inspection, pre-functional checks, start-up, functional performance testing, and Integrated Systems Testing on active sites, including load bank testing, failure-mode and transfer scenarios, liquid-cooling flushing and fluid quality verification, and GPU load step and ramp-rate behavior, owning the issues log through closure.
  • Hands-on testing and troubleshooting: Personally write test procedures, witness and run tests, analyze trend and power quality data, and troubleshoot failures across electrical, mechanical, and controls systems, particularly on first-of-a-kind products and sites where no precedent exists yet.
  • Customer, CxA, and vendor coordination: Act as the commissioning point of contact for customers, third-party commissioning agents, general contractors, and OEM vendors; coordinate witness schedules and readiness reviews, direct vendor start-up activities, and align commissioning scope with the Armada/customer responsibility matrix.
  • Turnover, operational readiness, and product feedback: Own turnover packages (test records, as-builts, O&M manuals, warranties, training) and the final commissioning sign-off for operational handoff, and feed failures, lessons learned, and test data back into product engineering so each product generation commissions faster than the last.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (or related field), or equivalent hands-on commissioning experience.
  • 8+ years of commissioning experience on mission-critical facilities, including at least 5 years on data center projects and hands-on leadership of Level 4 and Level 5 commissioning (functional performance testing and IST).
  • Deep, hands-on commissioning expertise in either electrical systems (MV/LV switchgear, UPS, BESS, transfer schemes, generators, protective relaying) or mechanical and controls systems (chillers, air handling, liquid cooling and CDUs, BMS/EPMS sequences), with strong working knowledge of the other.
  • Working knowledge of commissioning standards and codes (ASHRAE Guideline 0 and Standard 202, NETA ATS, NFPA 70/70E, NFPA 72) and Uptime Institute methodologies.
  • Experience writing commissioning plans, test scripts, and turnover documentation, not only executing them.
  • Comfort operating with a high degree of autonomy. You'll be defining the playbook, not inheriting one.
  • Willingness and ability to travel approximately 40–50% to project sites, factory/integrator facilities, and vendor locations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Commissioning certification such as CxA (ACG), BCxP (ASHRAE), CCP (BCA), or CBCP (AEE); a Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus.
  • Prior commissioning experience with modular, prefabricated, or containerized data centers, including factory acceptance testing at integrator facilities.
  • Experience commissioning high-density, liquid-cooled AI/GPU deployments (direct-to-chip, CDUs, technology cooling systems), including flushing, filtration, and fluid quality programs.
  • Experience with battery energy storage (BESS), GPU power stabilization, load step and ramp-rate testing, and utility interconnection requirements (e.g., ERCOT).
  • Experience on the hyperscale owner, colocation, or commissioning agent side, leading IST on large-scale (10 MW+) facilities.
  • Experience with commissioning management platforms (CxAlloy, CxPlanner, Facility Grid, or equivalent), Procore or Autodesk Construction Cloud, and test equipment (load banks, power quality analyzers, thermal imaging).
  • Experience standing up commissioning standards, templates, or governance processes for a growing team or product portfolio, rather than only executing against existing ones.
  • NFPA 70E qualified person training and OSHA 30.
