Description

Devblock and Role Overview

We are a software consulting agency that builds custom web and mobile applications for clients across healthcare, e-commerce, operations and logistics, fintech, and beyond. We are looking for a Nearshore Engineering Manager to lead and grow a team of software engineers while staying close enough to the code to lead by example.

This is a hands-on leadership role. You will coach and develop engineers, raise the bar on technical quality, and help us make AI-assisted development a genuine competitive advantage rather than a buzzword. You'll move fluidly between mentoring your team, jumping into a tricky technical problem, and partnering with leadership on how to scale engineering the right way.

Because this is a nearshore role, you'll enjoy strong time-zone alignment with our US-based clients and teams — making real-time collaboration the norm. We're looking for a trusted leader who builds a high-performance culture across distributed teams and treats that alignment as an advantage.

What You Will Do

  • Manage and mentor a team of software engineers through regular coaching, candid feedback, and active career development.
  • Split your time between engineering leadership and hands-on technical contribution, staying credible and current by doing the work alongside your team.
  • Lead technical discussions, code reviews, architecture reviews, and the development best practices that keep quality high and rework low.
  • Promote and standardize AI-assisted development workflows across engineering teams, turning ad hoc experimentation into repeatable practice.
  • Identify what great AI tool usage looks like in real delivery, and facilitate knowledge sharing so wins spread fast.
  • Prepare departmental updates and reports on team performance, challenges, and opportunities, giving leadership a clear and honest picture.
  • Partner with leadership to improve engineering processes, team structure, and overall effectiveness.
  • Support hiring — interviewing, candidate evaluation, and onboarding — and help new engineers ramp quickly and confidently.
  • Coordinate with recruiting partners to scale engineering teams as client demand grows.
  • Foster strong collaboration and communication flows across nearshore and US-based teams.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience.
  • 2+ years of people management or technical leadership experience.
  • Strong technical background with the ability to contribute hands-on when needed.
  • Proven experience mentoring engineers and building high-performing teams.
  • Familiarity with AI-powered development tools and workflows, and a point of view on how to use them well.
  • Strong organizational and reporting skills.
  • Experience participating in hiring and talent development.
  • Ability to work effectively in fast-paced, distributed environments.
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.
  • An AI-first mindset and genuine enthusiasm for continuous improvement.

Soft Skills & Behaviors Needed to Succeed

  • Leads by example — earns respect through technical credibility, not just title.
  • Balances empathy and accountability, developing people while holding a high bar.
  • Creates clarity and calm in fast-moving, ambiguous environments.
  • Defaults to coaching and asking good questions rather than simply handing out answers.
  • Takes ownership of team outcomes, culture, and growth.
  • Curious and adaptive — eager to adopt new tools and practices, and to help others do the same.

Work Model

  • Fully remote, based in Latin America, with significant overlap with US business hours for real-time collaboration with clients and delivery teams.
  • Contractor engagement.
  • Occasional flexibility to coordinate with team members across other time zones as projects require.
